Prep Football: Balers maul Cougars

GILROY—Until Friday night’s game, the last time the San Benito and Christopher football teams had played each other was in 2012. The Cougars probably wouldn’t mind if it was another three years—at a minimum—before they played the Haybalers again. San Benito mauled its third straight league opponent, 50-7.

GILROY—Christopher exploded right out of the gate, scoring six runs in the first inning of its 8-3 victory over crosstown rivals Gilroy Friday at Gavilan College.

Prep Water Polo: Balers top Cougars

GILROY—Each time Christopher and San Benito meet in the water, sparks fly and Tuesday’s contest was no different. The Balers got the better of the Cougars this time, winning 11-7 at Christopher High.

Three Gilroy-area ballers topped the list for the Monterey Bay League’s postseason boys basketball awards.

Eight Gilroy wrestlers left Palma High victorious Tuesday night. The Mustangs topped the hosts 57-15, losing only one match — heavyweight Santino Orozco lost 6-4 — and  forfeiting two (122 and 140). Nikko Villarreal (154) and Paul Fox (162) maintained their unblemished records, each notching a 'w' at the bout. Villarrel won his match by pin, while Fox won by fall.  Julian Carabajal (172) had the tough task of facing Palma's best wrestler, Martin Martinez. Carbajal was able to get the cradle in the third period to win by fall at 5:25. Gavin Melendez (108) got a nearside cradle at 1:14 to win by fall. Will Calderon (115) also won by fall at 5:03 of his bout.  Victor Daza (128) won by a 9-4 decision, while Victor Olmos (134) won by fall at 3:45. Gavilan Football: Carter, Miller and Kelley sign letters of intent

GILROY—Gavilan coach Spencer Gilford promised Deniko Carter, Armani Miller and Trevin Kelley he’d help them reach the next level. On Wednesday, Gilford fulfilled that promise.
