As hosts of the 26th annual Mustangs Classic, the Gilroy High girls varsity basketball team did well to advance to the finals with victories against Santa Catalina and Watsonville.

Bridget Denzel dissolved a 1-1 tie midway through the second half with a nifty back-handed shot that not only found the back of the cage, but also held up as the eventual game winner in a St. Francis 2-1 defeat of Gilroy High in the Central Coast Section field hockey finals Saturday in San Jose.

WRESTLING ROUNDUP: GHS, CHS each earn league dual wins

The Central Coast Section's No. 1-ranked Gilroy High wrestling team traveled south to face No. 8 Alisal for the Tri-County Athletic League dual meet opener for both squads Wednesday night. The Mustangs, who have gone the past nine seasons without losing a TCAL dual meet, kicked off year 10 with a 49-21 win over the Trojans to keep that streak in tact.
