As hosts of the 26th annual Mustangs Classic, the Gilroy High girls varsity basketball team did well to advance to the finals with victories against Santa Catalina and Watsonville.

Christopher High's Shelby O'Hara and Gilroy High's Lizabeth Orellana-Rios both said that there was something familiar with their match Tuesday afternoon.

FARGO, N.D.—The Gilroy High wrestling program has a storied history of producing elite athletes. The Mustangs have sent several wrestlers to the Asics/Vaughan Cadet and Junior Nationals tournament in Fargo, N.D. before, but none have ever won it—until now.

If there's one thing to be said about the Gilroy girls basketball team, it's that it knows how to battle. 

Expectations. Three years ago, head coach Tim Pierleoni gathered a bunch of bright-eyed freshmen and sophomores for a meeting at Brownell Middle School and laid out an extensive list of goals. The Christopher High football team's 2011 league championship season – in year three – may have taken everyone on the opposite sideline by surprise. But among the CHS players and coaching staff, it was exactly what was envisioned when the program opened in 2009.
