STAR Program Revives ‘King Lear’

San Juan Bautista – The seventeen members of the Gavilan STAR program will perform “The Daughters of Lear,” their adaptation of Shakespeare’s “King Lear.” The actors, who have been practicing for four weeks through the community college’s summer theater camp, will perform Aug. 13 and 14 at 7:30pm in El Teatro Campesino, 705 Fourth St., in San Juan Bautista. Tickets are available at the theater box office at $12 per adult, $10 per student or senior and $5 per child.

Sing up for AARP Safe Driving Class

Gilroy – The nations first and largest classroom refresher course for motorist 50 and older will be held Aug. 18. Participants will familiarize themselves with driver safety and new laws.

Three-year DMV certificates will be awarded for discounts on own auto insurance upon completion of this one-day program. There are no tests and class materials and certified instructor are provided by AARP. There is a minimal DMV certificate fee.

Perchlorate Solutions Discussed

San Martin – The public is invited to the next Perchlorate Community Advisory Group meeting, from 2 to 4pm Friday at the San Martin Lions Club Hall, 12415 Murphy Ave., San Martin.

Long-term remediation of perchlorate will be discussed.

Comedians Hit

The Local Stage

Gilroy – Stand Up Comedian Manny Maldonado will be appearing in Gilroy at the Longhouse Restaurant, starting at pm, Thursday. Maldonado is currently on the Latin Kings of Comedy Tour with Paul Rodriguez. He has appeared on ABC’s Comics Unleashed. Joining Maldonado is Kevin Young, who has worked with Robin Williams, Bobby Slayton and Darren Carter.

Gilroy – The American Red Cross is conducting two mobile blood drives in August.
