Three winning GHS teams produce 25 TCAL honorees for the spring
season; eight Mustangs earn first team All-TCAL recognition
Drew Andersen, Sr., SS/P
A do-it-all, reliable player on the diamond…On the mound, the three-year varsity player went 4-0 in league with two saves…Led the team with nine stolen bases…Batting average .321 for season in the No. 5 spot… “(Andersen) always has been very, very steady, just very focused mentally and ready to go,” Gilroy baseball head coach Clint Wheeler said. “He was very consistent.”
Ryan Evanger, Jr., Util.
A first-team All-TCAL choice in his first year of varsity ball, Evanger led the Mustang offense with a season batting average of .382 and a whopping .434 average in league play…One of the most consistent players at the plate all season… “I didn’t know a whole lot about him (before the season)…Being a younger kid, I didn’t know whether he’d be able to hit,” Wheeler said. “Ryan was a very nice addition to our team. He really helps solidify the middle of our lineup.”
Josh Sterling, Sr., CF
Sterling spent his three-year varsity career helping jump-start Gilroy’s offense at the top of the batting order…One of GHS baseball’s all-time leaders in career at-bats…Third in doubles on the team this season with nine…Season batting average of .326… “He’s been in the lead-off and No. 3 spot for three years,” Wheeler said. “As far as career at-bats, I think he’s in the top five.”
Michael Stevens, Jr., 3B
A hard worker who brought enthusiasm to the Mustang dugout…In his second full varsity season, led the team in doubles with 11 and in hits with 32…Batting average .376 for the season…”A great junior year,” Wheeler said. “We had a really big question mark at third base and (Stevens) volunteered to move over…He takes care of it in the classroom and works hard in the weight room. He’s definitely going to have a long baseball career.”
Lauryn Chris, Soph. 2B
Very effective as a lead-off hitter…speed and quickness made Chris a threat in the basepaths…Batting average of .425 led the team…Played outfield last season but her range in the infield allowed Chris to make a seamless transition to second this year…”All year she was able to start us off and able to advance to second and third…She’s very consistent as a batter as well,” said Gilroy softball head coach Catherine Hallada. “From her attitude and hard work within the first week (of the season) or so, I knew she’d be great. Every day after practice, she stays after and does her own running…Even though she’s young, it doesn’t mean anything. Her talent and motivation are very accelerated.”
Sarah Villar, Sr. P
A permanent fixture in the GHS circle for the past three seasons, Villar finished out her GHS career with a 12-6 season record…A repeat selection to the All-TCAL first team…Hit first Gilroy out-of-the-park home run on the Mustangs’ home field this year…Will play for Sonoma State next season… “(Villar) mixes it up. She knew a lot of girls in the TCAL and so she knew what she could throw according to each batter,” Hallada said. “On the flip side, she was able to come through with a lot of clutch hits to pull us out of some sticky situations.”
Ryan Chisolm, Sr., MH
Followed up an MVP basketball season with a strong volleyball season…Moved to middle hitter to fill a void this season and “Once we did that, he really took off,” said Gilroy volleyball head coach Craig Martin…Second in line in kills on the team to fellow first-team selection Vinny DeLorenzo…Also one of the team’s best passers in the back row, a rare characteristic for a middle hitter…Will continue basketball career next year at Linfield College in Oregon…”He could play any one of the spots,” Martin said. “He’s a great utility player, not one-dimensional.”
Vinny DeLorenzo, Sr. OH
One of the league’s most explosive and powerful hitters, DeLorenzo was the Mustangs’ go-to player at the net…Finished the season with a team-leading 325 kills, which also put DeLorenzo near the top of the area’s kill-leader list…A three-year varsity starter along with Chisolm…Runner-up in TCAL MVP voting* to Monterey’s Dakota Bell…DeLorenzo will continue his volleyball career at Santa Barbara City College next year… “The team couldn’t have had close to the success it did with out (Chisolm and DeLorenzo),” Martin said. “They’re superb athletes.”
