Championship Round 3 went off with out a hitch for the trio of Nikko Villarreal (125), Willie Fox (130) and Blake Kastl (135)Friday afternoon in Bakersfield. All three are 3-0 so far and will wrestle once more this evening for a spot in the semifinals.
Villarreal battled back from a 6-2 deficit against Blake Lowrie of Laguna turning the tide for a 9-8 decision.
Willie Fox drew Tanner Feurerstein of Oakdale in the third championship round, prevailing 9-4.
Kastl picked apart Jesse Taylor of Poway and cruised to an 11-1 major decision.
In the quarterfinals, Villarreal will take on Alex Cisneros of Selma, the state’s No. 1-ranked 125-pounder, Fox will meet Nick Pena – No. 2 in the state – of Selma and Kastl’s opponent is Dalton Metivier of Lincoln.
Meanwhile, down in the consolation portion, Leif Dominguez (103) rebounded from a second-round loss with a 5-0 win to keep his tournament alive. Paul Fox also atoned for an earlier defeat with an 8-2 decision against Justin Martin Del Camp of West.
Victor Olmos’ (119) day came to an end after a narrow 5-4 loss in the second consolation round. Aaron Gonzalez (140) also met the end of the road on Friday, going 0-2.
Two more consolation rounds and one more championship round will take place on Day 1 later tonight.
