Gilroy – The sounds of blue grass, rock and roll and rhythm and blues will soon beckon Gilroyans to the city’s historic downtown for a summer of Friday nights packed with music and dance.
The second annual Fifth Street Live concert series begins next week.
Guitar master Jerry Miller will round out the summer series in September with his band Moby Grape, which includes two former members of the Doobie Brothers. Before then, a long list of top-notch bands representing a range of musical styles will take the stage at the corner of Eigleberry and Fifth streets.
“We worked on putting together a diverse, talented and experienced list of bands,” said Steve Gearing, an event organizer.
The bands will play just a few feet from Gearing’s Fifth Street restaurant, Happy Dog Pizza Company.
A two block stretch of Monterey Street, between Fourth and Sixth streets, has been closed since April as the city forges ahead with plans to overhaul streets and sidewalks.
“I think the concert series will be great” for downtown, Gearing said. “It’s going to bring down hundreds of people every Friday night.”
Highlights of the summer include last year’s favorite JJ Hawgs on Aug. 4, John Garcia on Sept. 1, and a season closing with the Corvairs, regulars at the city’s annual Garlic Festival, on Sept. 29.
The Fifth Street Live concert series begins Friday, June 30. The free concerts, which start 7pm every Friday, will run through Sept. 29.
