Mason, P. Largo back from injury; Binowski solidifies back row
for GHS boys volleyball team
GILROY – The Mustang spikers are getting stronger by the minute.
In Friday’s latest 15-13, 15-4, 15-0 thrashing of host Alisal, the Gilroy High boys volleyball team benefited from the return of junior middle blocker Nick Mason as well as the steady progress of freshman defensive specialist Josh Binowski.
“We’re better now with the addition of these two guys,” said head coach Craig Martin of Mason and Binowski. “Mason is just an extra added dimension with his height in the middle… and Binowski has just been doing a great job in the back row.”
Sophomore setter Patrick Largo also returned from injury and has been getting his repetitions with the junior varsity squad.
The Mustangs upped their Tr-County Athletic League record to 9-1 and their overall record to 17-8 with two games ahead this week Wednesday at rival Monterey and home Friday against Seaside at 6 p.m.
“We’re hoping to reach the 20-win mark. That’s what our goal is,” Coach Martin said. “If we beat Live Oak, we make it (into CCS). Our goal is to win out the next four games and go to CCS. We keep telling them one game at time. It started at six, then five, then four. Win out and it’s off to CCS.”
Gilroy suffered its only league loss against neighboring rival Live Oak (10-0 in T-CAL) in a five-game thriller. The Mustangs hope to get revenge as well as a share of the league championship with a victory May 7 at home against the Acorns.
In Friday’s victory, Gilroy was led by senior hitters Jason Medenceles (eight kills) and Scott Martin (four kills). In the third-game shutout, senior setter Matt Largo served for eight straight points without a return shot by Alisal.
“We were a little shaky in the first game, then we settled down and really started taking care of business,” Coach Martin said. “We just came out sluggish because we’ve been off for a week and a half. But once we got our rhythm down, we took care of business.”
