David Ray Miranda

David Ray Miranda, a 16-year-old Junior at the Dr. TJ Owens Early College Academy (GECA) is this week’s “Student of the Week.”
What inspires you?
My family and friends inspire me to be a better version of myself and to keep improving. They support me through my failures and success, and their support motivates me to overcome each obstacle that comes in my way.
What is your favorite subject in school?
It would have to be history. I really enjoy how governments of different nations work and how much history truly does repeat itself. We can learn from past mistakes while continuing what has been successful in order to take one giant leap for mankind.
If you had the power to change one thing in the world, what would it be?
I would want to lower the poverty and unemployment rates because I believe that people deserve the right to be content and to have basic necessities like homes, food, and warmth. I would not know how I would survive without these, and I would not want others to face these challenges.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go?
I would like to travel to Hawaii. It is the most relaxing place I have visited and the scenery is just beautiful.
Name one big challenge in your life right now:
I find keeping up with my college classes to be challenging because they are more demanding than my high school classes. The courses are more in depth about the topics and need more time and dedication. However I find it more meaningful since I actually think about what I am learning about and since it goes into more depth on topics I find interesting.
What is your dream job?
I would like to become a psychologist especially for people with disabilities.
What are your three favorite things?
It would be my phone, a frisbee, and Pokemon.
Favorite book:
“The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak or “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.
What do you want to do after high school?
I would want to go to either UCLA or UC Davis to study psychology. I hope to graduate with my bachelor’s degree and continue on to my master’s or travel the world for a while.
Something that makes you smile:
I really enjoy being outside. There’s just something about the peacefulness and serenity that only nature can bring.
Top three most played songs on your iTunes or iPod:
“Counting Stars,” by One Republic, “Drive” by by Train and “Keep Your Head Up” by Andy Grammar.
