The Philanthropic Educational Organization recently awarded scholarships to two deserving women in Gilroy. A scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Sydney Hurtado in honor of community activist Huldah Champion, who died recently. Hurtado will be going to Gavilan in the fall and hopes to transfer to Stanislaus State. The other scholarship went to Gilroy High student Christine Bobula. She is preparing to enter University of California, Berkeley in the fall. Both recipients and their mothers were honored by PEO at a reception in June.
