MORGAN HILL – A man died when he jumped from the East Dunne Avenue overpass in Morgan Hill onto southbound U.S. 101 and was hit by a motorist just after 10 p.m Thursday. The motorist left the scene without stopping.

Sgt. Dave Leonard of the Morgan Hill Police Department said the motorist, if found, would not be charged because the incident was deemed to be “an intentional act.”

The man who allegedly jumped to commit suicide, Leonard said, appeared to be in his late teens or early twenties. He was carrying a wallet but, when police traced the identification, the owner of the wallet turned out to be alive and well. He had been drinking in a bar two weeks ago, Leonard said, when the wallet was stolen.

Two witnesses, from Soledad and Salinas, were traveling southbound and were able to provide police with some information.

“I’m surprised there were no reports of somebody climbing over the barrier on Dunne,” Leonard said. “Unfortunately, there is always an increase in this kind of activity (suicide) at this time of year.”

The coroner’s office said Friday morning that they had no next of kin and could not yet identify the man.

Traffic wasn’t affected due to the late hour.
