A suspected known gang member wanted by Gilroy police on a $1 million warrant turned himself in Wednesday afternoon.

Christian Michael Renteria, 18, wanted on felony counts of conspiracy to commit a crime and participation in a criminal street gang self-surrendered around 2 p.m. at the Gilroy Police Department on Hanna Street, GPD Sgt. Chad Gallacinao said.

Renteria was one of 26 people police targeted in a citywide gang sweep Dec. 8, but police were unable to locate him.

Gallacinao said it’s “not very common” for wanted suspects such as Renteria to turn themselves in, but the GPD’s Anti-Crime Team has been actively searching for him, and interviewed many of his friends and family members regarding his whereabouts.

“And because of those efforts, we feel those are the main reasons he self surrendered today,” Gallacinao said. “Does it work all the time? No. But this time, it absolutely did, to the community’s benefit.”

Renteria had been featured in the Dispatch’ recurring Most Wanted section.
