The following organizations and
individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For the news that Gilroy is receiving another big boost in tax revenue from steadily increasing retail sales. It’s about $750,000 annually beyond current revenue projections. That revenue number is likely to keep passing city projections since Kohl’s, super Wal-Mart and a variety of other businesses are scheduled to open in the two new shopping centers flanking the entrance to Highway 152. The question for Gilroyans now is: What public good, beyond better salaries and benefits for city employees, can come from the cash that keeps flowing into city coffers?
JEERS: For the string of hot days. Whew! Let’s keep it in the 90s. Though this may not be the last heat wave before summer expires, thank goodness the temperatures have fallen to a reasonable level.
JEERS: For the ridiculous nature of building Indian casinos. To think that a five-member “tribe” that isn’t even close to having local roots can come into the area, make a land deal and dictate development with little or no input from the surrounding communities is truly ludicrous.
CHEERS: For Gilroy High School Principal Bob Bravo. Last Saturday’s feature story portrayed a committed educator who cares deeply about the success of Gilroy High students. Bravo has his critics, but it’s clear he cares and is working toward improving GHS and himself.
