Dear Editor:
Many teachers in the Gilroy area received a mailer this week from the California Teachers Association. The purpose of this mail-out was to urge the teachers to vote for Kerry for President and Barbara Boxer for U.S. Senate. This recommendation was based upon the fact that each of these two candidates offered much more funding for schools and education than did their opponents.
The mailer showed a comparison of the records of these candidates in spending this last year. Kerry promised to outspend Bush and Bill Jones, Boxer’s opponent, looked chincy compared to Boxer’s expenditures. One can readily note that Boxer is one of the last “big spenders” in Washington, D.C. Spend, spend, spend … if something is not right, just pour more money on it and all will be well.
The CTA and its teachers have little conception of our national debt. Had they an understanding, they would favor a more conservative program and conservative candidates. Our current national debt is $8.2 trillion, compounded by a deficit for the 2004 year of $552 billion. These figures boggle the mind and few understand their significance. Never before in history has any nation had such debt.
The California Teachers Association recommends more and more spending, i.e. spend your way out of debt. Hey! Wait a minute, that excess spending is acceptable – after all, it is “for the children”! I guess it’s OK to saddle the little rascals with an insurmountable debt burden for when they grow up.
It has been said that the national debt is a greater threat to our society than terrorism. And I believe it is true, especially true if interest rates rise. These two senators recommended by the CTA are the ones responsible for our massive debt. Both senators and many teachers are financially irresponsible in their demands. Let’s hope that in the coming election out voting citizens are a lot smarter than our teachers who share the view of the CTA.
Bush is the lesser of two evils and Bill Jones is a known conservative. The future of our nation and welfare of our children depends upon a wise choice on our part in the Nov. 2 election.
