What better way is there to learn than through music?

I can still call up some of those childhood jingles in my head, or songs that I learned with my classmates to perform at concerts. They just stick with you.

Must be that “hook” they talk about in the music business.

A very creative teacher at Cerra Vista School, Ms. Sharon Wise-Howard, decided to teach her students’ lifelong lessons about world peace and respect for our planet through the tool of music.

What’s most impressive is that these kids are only first- and second-graders, but will surely have these songs and their valuable messages ringing in their ears for a lifetime.

Honestly, the parents of these kids are most certainly going to be the prime audience for this production; however, I encourage you to check it out as well.

When the kids trot on stage adorned with tie-dye and beads, it does warm your heart.

The students perform an array of songs, including their opening number about “A Whole Lotta Learnin’ Goin’ On” and “It’s Your Character,” with every letter in the word “character” standing for an important value, such as honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Another focus of the performance is the importance of thinking globally.

Several of the songs talk about teaching peace around the world, and celebrating the differences between countries.

This no doubt gets the kids thinking beyond just their neighborhood, and reminds them that there are children on the other side of the globe who deserve our peace and respect.

While I didn’t get a chance to catch the whole performance, I did catch their touching rendition of “Love Can Build a Bridge,” complete with the chorus in sign language.

These kids did a terrific job in learning the lyrics and performing for an audience of adults, who were surely grateful to be reminded of the valuable messages contained in the featured songs.

Catch “The Cerra Vista Peace and Respect Program” on ED-TV Channel 19 Friday, at 5 p.m., and Saturday at 6 p.m.
