I got to thinking earlier this week how thankful I am for certain things in life.
You know those little pick-me-ups that get you through your day. It might be a helpful person who goes out of their way to lend a hand or a quiet moment to clear your head.
Here are those blessed people or things in my life that give my day a boost:
A nap in the middle of the afternoon – to me, there is nothing more delicious or luxurious than a catnap in the middle of the day … or the beginning or the end.
Reality TV – old and new shows. You can’t beat it for its entertainment and shock value. It’s a fun, brainless distraction at the end of a hectic day.
The friendly clerk at Nob Hill who cheerfully gives our 1-year-old daughter Emma a balloon every time she sees us.
Drive through windows – at restaurants, at the bank, at the drycleaners. They’re speedy, convenient and you don’t have to wake up a sleeping baby to eat lunch, deposit a check or pick up your shirts.
The mute button on the phone. It comes in handy especially when you’re jabbering to your daughter during a business call. You can sound like a blabbering idiot and no one is the wiser.
Advil. 100 milligrams. Need I say more?
A free day of hooky, especially if it’s an unexpected holiday that you didn’t know you got off of work.
PBS. Especially their morning programming for my little one. A half an hour of Sesame Street equals an empty dishwasher and a clean kitchen.
Checking off the last item on your to-do list. I confess that I haven’t had the pleasure of ticking off that last chore without staring a new to-do list in the face. But a girl can dream, can’t she?
An unexpected phone call from a friend. There’s something about hearing a friendly voice on the other end of the line that makes me feel a little less alone and a little more cared for.
A grand night out. It doesn’t have to be a fancy dinner or a night out at the theater. Maybe just a quick bite out and a movie. It doesn’t matter what the occasion or where you go or how dressed up you get. What matters is spending it with a loved one – and having fun of course.
Enjoying a meal you didn’t cook yourself. I can think of very few things that make me feel more nurtured than a home-cooked meal cooked in my kitchen by someone else.
And sometimes there are things that just aren’t supposed to happen and they do anyway for no good reason. They seem like the worst moments in the world, but later turn out to be very nearly the best.
Like the wakeup call that never came and the extra two hours of sleep that its absence afforded you.
A rainy day canceling a much anticipated trip that turns into an indoors margarita and board game day with friends.
Uninvited guests who remind you that you possess both a sense of humor and a killer dish you can whip up at a moment’s notice.
For all of these things and so many more I am truly grateful. I know my little family and I are better off for these blessings.
