Dear Editor,
Recently, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to rescind their decision to close the San Martin Animal Shelter an additional day per week. That prior decision would have had terrible effects on the animals and we started a letter-writing campaign to advise the public about how devastating this choice would be.
Thanks to everyone who wrote letters, called and sent e-mails to the Board and to Greg Van Wassenhove. Their change of heart would not have happened without all of you and the excellent reporting done by The Dispatch. It was very important that the Board heard that the public supports the efforts made by the shelter, and that we all feel it is necessary for people to have access to it as much as possible.
I was saddened, however, to read in The Dispatch that Don Gage said that this was only a one-year fix. I hope supervisors can find a way to avoid future cuts to the shelter program because I believe the public will feel the same way next year as they did this year.
