The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
JEERS: For the news that Thanksgiving donations for St. Joseph’s Family Center are seriously lagging. The cupboards are nearly bare at Gilroy’s foremost center for feeding and assisting the poor, but we know generous Gilroyans will come through. Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away. Bring turkeys, canned goods or a check to: SJFC, 7950 Church Street, Suite A, (842-6662).
CHEERS: For Gilroy’s No. 1 boxer and all-around community patron, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. “The Ghost” didn’t fight his best fight against Mexico’s Orlando Salido, but his opponent cheated. Salido’s positive post-fight test for steroids clearly demonstrated the match wasn’t fought in a level ring. As it should be, Guerrero will get a chance to erase the memory of this fight and reclaim his world featherweight title soon.
JEERS: For the jaywalking students who flood the streets around Gilroy High School after school lets out. Their cavalier behavior helps makes GHS the most dangerous school in town with regards to vehicles and pedestrians. It’s a wonder there hasn’t been a gut-wrenching major injury accident. Should we build an ugly fence in the middle of 10th Street? Only if multiple ticketing police stings for jaywalking don’t work.
CHEERS: For the passage of state Proposition 1D Tuesday. Though the Dispatch editorial board recommended a “no” vote, the silver lining is that this bond, according to school district officials, will ensure that the first phase of Christopher High School gets built.
CHEERS: For Deputy Gabe Sandoval, newly assigned as the Sheriff’s Department rural crimes officer. Sandoval , born and raised in South County, has plenty of ties to the area and broad experience. His expertise and experience are a perfect match for his new job. With tractors and irrigation pipes being stolen, the ag sheriff’s job is more important than ever.
