Gilroy – A team of tech savvy criminals are ripping off South Valley residents at Automated Teller Machines – and customers may not even realize it.
The thieves install a device in front of the normal ATM card slot. It reads an individual’s card information while a hidden camera disguised as a pamphlet holder captures the pin code as it is entered. Data is transmitted back to the thieves who run the operation from a nearby car. In a matter of minutes, they copy the cards and break into accounts with the stolen pin codes.
“I don’t know of us having any problems here in Gilroy,” said Gilroy Sgt. Kurt Svardal.
