DEAR EDITOR:
There are many things about the Gilroy community I adore: The
year-in, year-out dedication of the volunteers at the Armory, the
unbelievable volunteer coordination at the Garlic Festival, and
Gilroy Community Services’ John Bisceglie’s productions to name a

DEAR EDITOR:

There are many things about the Gilroy community I adore: The year-in, year-out dedication of the volunteers at the Armory, the unbelievable volunteer coordination at the Garlic Festival, and Gilroy Community Services’ John Bisceglie’s productions to name a few. And, there is Gavilan College’s STAR program.

Thank you, Marilyn Abad-Cardinalli and Pepe Espinosa, for your vision and love that led you to create a program where kids are free to explore and expand their creative spirits. The unit leaders are not your run of the mill camp counselors, but young adults with a gift for making kids feel cherished.

I was especially touched at the traditional end-of-session award ceremony, when “Miss Shannon” Derry presented each member of her unit of the oldest kids a very thoughtful and insightful tribute. Miss Derry was a “STAR kid” who grew into a unit leader, and this is her last year. She leaves, having given to others as much as she received. That speaks VOLUMES about the quality of leadership of this program. My son, needless to say, can’t wait for next year.
