Three seats on the Gilroy City Council are set to expire in November, currently held by Council Members Peter Arellano, Peter Leroe-Muñoz and Dion Bracco.
Though the deadlines for prospective candidates to file the required paperwork have not been set, City Clerk Shawna Freels said she’ll have an exact opening date in April, and the election is set for Nov. 4.
As of this week, one Gilroyan has filed a statement of intent to run for office this year – current Planning Commissioner Tom Fischer – and Leroe-Muñoz has renamed his campaign committee in preparation for the upcoming race.
It does not mean either person has qualified as a candidate but an indication they intend to run in the 2014 election and may maintain a committee to raise and expend monies, Freels said.
The nomination filing period, when prospective candidates must collect the signatures of at least 20 and no more than 30 registered voters in Gilroy, will open some time in July, according to Freels. Once the signatures are qualified as valid, the prospective candidate becomes a legitimate candidate, she said.
During that period, prospective candidates must complete additional paperwork available at City Hall, located at 7351 Rosanna St. Freels said she’ll publish the official voting calendar and schedule on the City’s website, www.cityofgilroy.org and publish a notice of the opening in the Gilroy Dispatch.
