Drivers Need to Be More Aware
Drivers Need to Be More Aware

“I am a part of this community of Gilroy and what’s been going on in this town when the school session has come back around is outrageous. I work for one of the schools here in Gilroy, I help with the students and the parents and the people that drop off these students and pick up these students have gotten out of control. Drivers in Gilroy in general have gotten out of control.

In the last three days on Oct. 15, and today, Oct. 17 we’ve already had two citizens of Gilroy get mowed over by a vehicle and both have passed on. I believe the people of Gilroy need to start paying attention more, to stop being in such a hurry and to take a little bit more time out especially around the schools.

I own a Jeep, I drive around this community constantly and when driving my Jeep, and it’s not a small vehicle, I have almost been mowed over by vehicles because they are not paying attention or because they just believe that they are the only ones on these roads today and I believe this needs some kind of attention or written up in our paper.”

Red Phone:

Caller you are right, careless driving often has tragic results.

Gilroy drivers should make more of an effort to slow down and be alert when driving. Hopefully the community as a whole will take more notice after both accidents that have recently occurred. For more information, see the story on today’s front page about the little boy killed while walking to school.

Pedestrians Pay More Attention

“My complaint is people who walk in the middle of the street when they have a sidewalk provided for them by the city and they are exercising. I don’t know if people walking in the street are as bad as the people who are driving in the same direction as these people and go around them driving into the other lane and almost cause head-on collisions. Is there anyway to educate the walkers and the drivers?”

Red Phone:

Good question caller, maybe a call for some community awareness or education is due in wake of what you have witnessed and the recent incidents involving pedestrians and traffic. The city has made an effort to provide bike paths, like the one created after the recent Santa Teresa Bridge improvements. If one wants to exercise along streets and areas with traffic in the city they should respect that the roads are for use by drivers and drivers please be responsible and watch out for pedestrians sharing the roads. In the wake of pedestrian deaths in the city, questions continually grow in regard to street safety as to whether it is on the decline and what plans to city officials have to address the situation. The Dispatch will be following this issue so please good readers stay tuned for a story about this in Thursday’s Dispatch.
