Morgan Hill – The Orchard Valley Toros U-11 Girls Class 1 soccer team, led by coaches Kevin Dunwoodie and Karah Silacci, took the District II Cup 2006 Blue Division Championship at the Soccer Complex in Morgan Hill last Sunday.
Tough defense marked this championship run for the Toros. Goalies Emily Barham and Amy Kryston along with tenacious defense by Cailin McCarry, Emma Leach, Shannon Rauschnot led to shutouts in each of the four games. Sabrina Rice, Gina Rodriguez, Annie Lopez, Jessica Reid, Rebecca Rottenborn, Rachel Thompson, Jamie Lanz, Cynthia Sanchez and Jasmine Fernandez provided the offensive spark.
Sanchez scored two goals and Fernandez scored one on a penalty kick in the semifinal game to beat the Peninsula Zoom 3-0. In the championship game, the Toros beat the Sunnyvale Roadrunners 2-0 with goals coming from Reid and Rice. The Toros will play in the Castro Valley tournament Jan. 6-7 and in the State Cup Jan. 20-21.
