Track Invitational, the Christopher High boys’ track and field
team still managed to finish in third place out of 21 teams behind
the efforts of Martin Ettema, Chase Hill and Keaton Vogel.
GILROY — Despite having just a handful of boys competing Saturday at the inaugural “Garlic Classic” Track Invitational, the Christopher High boys’ track and field team still managed to finish in third place out of 21 teams behind the efforts of Martin Ettema, Chase Hill and Keaton Vogel.
The three either posted a first- or second-place finish in each of their respective events.
Ettema, for instance, recorded a top-spot time in the 300-meter hurdles when he clocked a 43.18 to finish in first place. Then, while competing in the 110-meter hurdles, he took second place with a time of 16.05 seconds.
Ettema’s time on Saturday in the 110-meter hurdles actually tied his season best. He previously recorded a 16.05 at the Willow Glen Relays on Feb. 5, a time that is currently seventh best in the Central Coast Section.
Ettema’s teammates in Chase Hill and Keaton Vogel, meanwhile, went 1-2 in the pole vault, each recording a 9-06 in the event.
As a team, the Cougars compiled 36 points to take third place behind runner-up San Benito (68 points) and champion Enterprise, which racked up 86 team points en route to the victory.
Christopher also defeated Palma, which finished fourth with 30 points.
The inaugural invitational was hosted by Christopher, although it took place at the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex, located on the campus of Gilroy High School.
The Mustangs were also present for Saturday’s meet, but they finished in a tie for sixth place with Hayward at 27 points — one point behind fifth-place finisher Madera South.
The Gilroy boys received points from two of its relay teams — the 800 sprint medley and the 4×200 relay team, which took first place in 1:32.77.
The spring medley, though, took second place behind San Benito but recorded a 1:36.10, nevertheless. According to the latest state rankings by dyestatcal.com, Gilroy’s sprint medley time is the third fastest recorded time in California this season.
San Benito’s 1:35.68 is No. 1 overall.
In the throws, Gilroy’s Cordero Gonzalez took fourth place in the shot put with a 47-02 ½, and fourth place in the discus with a 130-03.
On the girls side, the Mustangs’ distance medley took second in 13:20.22; its 4×100 relay team finished fifth in 54.68; and its 800 sprint medley team placed seventh in 2:06.05.
In the throws, Sarina Sandoval and Angeline Kimbo finished 1-3 in the shot put. Sandoval’s 36-03 was first overall, and is also the top throw this season in the Central Coast Section, while Kimbo’s 35-10 placed her third Saturday, and moves her into third in the CCS as well.
Kimbo also placed fourth Saturday in the discus event with a throw of 93-06, while Samantha Irwin finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 4-05.
The Gilroy girls placed sixth out of 17 teams with 32 points, edging Notre Dame’s 29 points but finishing behind the top three teams — San Benito (79), Tulare Western (66) and Leland (52).
The Christopher High girls’ track and field team, meanwhile, finished in ninth place with 17 points.
Lina Craighill earned the best finish when she placed second in the high jump with a 4-07, while Claudia Ferreira was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 53.33 seconds.
Two relay teams — the 4×100 and 800 sprint medley — also earned top-five finishes for Christopher. The 4×100 relay recorded a 54.20 to place fourth, while the sprint medley was fifth in 2:04.86.
Frosh/Soph Note:
Gilroy sophomores Ian Morlang and Billy McDonald finished 1-2 in the boys’ frosh/soph shot put competition Saturday. Morlang was first with a 43-05, while McDonald trailed with a 42-03.
