TENNIS: Alisal sweeps doubles play in 5-2 win over Christopher

The girls eke out 68-67 victory, boys fall 85-37
Head coach Jeff Myers tried just about everything to gain points for his girls track and field team as Christopher High took on Monte Vista Christian in its Monterey Bay League dual meet opener Thursday.

“I was throwing girls in every event to steal any point possible,” Myers wrote in an e-mail.

With girls entered in events for the first time in competition – Maddie Peterson, 300 hurdles, Nadine Filippi, 400-meter dash, Haylee Peterson, 100, Lili Nguyen, high jump and Cailin McCarry, coming off an injury, 200 and 400 – the strategy worked and the Cougars eked out a 68-67 victory.

On the boys’ side, despite five first placers the Cougars fell 85-37.

“In the heat on the dirt track at MVCHS, both teams competed hard and there were many close races,” Myers stated.

Monique Esparanza took first in the 400 (1:05.78) and the 800 (2:39.17), Claudia Ferreira’s 52.49 in the 300 hurdles gave her the top spot, Catherine Bright earned first in the long jump with a 13-foot, 6 inch leap, Kaelin Sylva won the pole vault at six feet and Lauryn Preeshi tossed the discus 87-feet, 3 inches for the win.

Marty Ettema continued a solid start to the season for the boys, triumphing in the 110 high hurdles (15.75) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (43.82.) Marcus Harrell blistered the dirt track in the 100, crossing first in 11.61 seconds, Chase Hill pole vaulted to the top position with a 9-foot-6 clearance and Daryl Akers posted a 38-foot triple jump.

The Cougars will compete in the annual Avis-Kelley Invite at Gilroy High’s Garcia Elder Sports Complex on Saturday.
