Gilroy – The Sudden Impact 11-and-under travel baseball team placed fourth out of 16 teams in their final tournament in Fremont last Sunday.

But they had to battle back to do it.

After finishing with one win, one loss and a tie during pool play on Saturday, it looked grim for the Sudden Impact. But Sunday began with an offensive burst that led to an 11-2 victory over the Los Gatos Pumas. In its second victory of the day, the Sudden Impact downed the Fremont Blaze, 7-2, setting up a final game to decide 3rd and 4th place.

In that showdown, the Brentwood Blast took the early lead with two runs in the first inning and two more in the second. The Blaze kept their lead into the fifth inning, when the Sudden Impact woke up and scored four runs of their own.

After knotting the game at 4-4 with one inning to play, the Sudden Impact gave up four runs to the tough Brentwood team the sixth. The San Martin-based team dropped the game 8-4 but wound up in fourth place after an inauspicious beginning.

Coach Dave Villar was pleased with how well the team played.

“In just our second season, Sudden Impact has shown that they can compete with many of the top teams in the area,” he said.

The Sudden Impact will be holding tryouts for the upcoming season, with the first scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 6 at Buck’s Field in San Martin. For more information, contact Dave Villar at (408) 848-6158.
