The San Juan Bautista Intertribal Council is inviting members of the public to attend a rain dance at the city’s Old Mission San Juan Bautista – to bring back rain to the drought-stricken valley.
The rain dances will be held at 9:30 a.m. every Sunday until rain returns, organizers said.
“We are inviting anyone who wants to dance and pray for rain,” said Laynee Bluebird Reyna of the council that organized the dances.
She said local tribe, Amah-Mutsun, and other tribes will send members to dance.
In 2013, the region had some of the driest conditions on record – with only four inches of precipitation the entire calendar year in nearby Hollister.
Reyna said she was optimistic, though.
“We will dance in the rain, too,” she said. “We’re going to get out there and get wet.”
