A truck carrying trash overturned while making a left turn from U.S. 101 onto Monterey Road about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Hector Perez, of Gilroy, who was driving the Pacific Coast truck to a nearby landfill, escaped with just minor scratches on his leg. There were no other injuries.

The road remained open while traffic was re-routed and the debris was cleaned up. A single Gilroy fire engine responded to the crash.

Witnesses said they saw the load on the open-bed truck shifting when Perez made the turn and knew the truck was in trouble. They said he wasn’t speeding or driving in an unsafe manner when he made the turn.

The truck came to rest on the passenger side near the curb as the contents spilled out.

“It was little scary,” Perez said. “I never had anything like this happen before.”
