The Christopher High girls soccer team kept pace with first-place Watsonville and upped its Monterey Bay League record to 7-1-1 with a 3-1 road triumph over Monterey High on Tuesday.
Ariana Jaso, Alondra Villanueva and Anita Lopez recorded the Cougars’ goals. CHS lead 2-0 at halftime.
With three games remaining on the MBL docket, the Cougars have a two-game lead over North Monterey County for second place and sit one win back of the Wildcatz for first. The three matches left are against the other top-tier teams in the league, beginning with the Condors in Castroville on Thursday. CHS then hosts Watsonville on Feb. 14 and travels to Pajaro Valley on Feb. 16.
BOYS BASKETBALL
On the road against Monterey High, which has already clinched the Monterey Bay League boys basketball title, Christopher gave the Toreadores plenty to handle in a back-and-forth first half and trailed by just five points, 27-22.
However, a lopsided third period, in which the Cougars (8-15 overall, 4-7 MBL) were outscored 20-11, set the tone the rest of the way in a 64-45 Monterey (20-4 overall, 12-0 MBL) victory Tuesday night.
“We struggled on the offensive end and they were finally able to crack our defense,” CHS head coach Kaden Bahner said of the third quarter. “Overall, I was pleased with our effort against a very good Monterey team.”
The Cougars close out the MBL regular season Thursday at home against Monte Vista Christian. Win or lose, CHS will finish in fifth place and qualify for the MBL postseason tournament.
Freshman Dillon Day led CHS with 16 points on Tuesday, and Andrew Foster had 10.
