Two Gilroy schools were recently given the honorable privilege of being named a California Distinguished School for their “strong commitment and innovative approaches to improving student academic achievement,” according to a press release from the California Department of Education.
Ascension Solorsano Middle School and Dr. T.J. Owens Early College Academy were two of 218 statewide public middle and high schools given the distinction this year.
“These schools have gone the extra mile to provide high-quality instruction that puts their students on the right path toward career and college,” State Superintendent Tom Torlakson said.
After meeting a variety of academic qualifications, the two Gilroy schools were invited to apply to be recognized as a California Distinguished School. The applications process consists of a written application and a county-led inspection.
Ascension Solorsano and Dr. T.J. Owens Early College will be honored in May during regional award ceremonies where Torlakson will present each school with a 2013 Distinguished School plaque and flag.
No Morgan Hill schools were recognized this year.
