Two men are dead after a late-night, high-speed accident in east Gilroy that left a light pole sticking out of house and had police scouring for two additional occupants of the car, police and witnesses said.

The single-car crash occurred at some point early Thursday morning near Sixth and Alexander streets, police and witnesses said. The car appeared to be traveling at a high speed before the crash due to long skid marks at the scene.

Four people were originally in the car, but by the time police arrived, there were only two people inside, both dead, witnesses said. The other two men ran from the scene, and police were still apparently looking for them as of 9:30 a.m. Thursday, searching a nearby park and various other streets, witnesses said.

The accident scene, blocked off by police tape and emergency vehicles, still showed signs of the brutal crash Thursday morning. Glass from a white car rendered immediately unidentifiable from impact was strewn across a full block and a light pole, which the car had hit, had been sheared off and tossed into a nearby home. Nobody in the house was hurt, witnesses said.

The car might have also hit a tree during the crash, according to observations on scene.

More on this developing story and photos from the scene will be posted throughout the day, including by 12 p.m. Thursday.
