Campus goes on lockdown Monday afternoon
Gilroy – Gilroy High School went under lockdown Monday afternoon after an unknown man threatened to assault the principal.

The man, estimated by police to be in his 30s, walked into the high school’s main office about 4pm and asked to see the principal, James Maxwell. When a receptionist told him the principal wasn’t in his office, the man said he was going to find him and attack him. He left, and was spotted getting into a black passenger vehicle on 10th Street.

Officer Cherie Somavia called additional units to the scene, and the campus was put under lockdown about 4:15pm. Football players peeked out of the gymnasium at the eight officers gathered near the theater, where Maxwell was attending a training.

Somavia said the man was 6 feet tall, white, with a side-part in his hair and a mustache. On Monday afternoon, he wore a navy blue shirt and green pants. Police do not believe he was armed. As of press time, he had not been identified, but Sgt. Jim Gillio said he was caught on video.

Lockdown was lifted by 4:30pm.
