Firefighters responded to a report of a grass fire Friday on Buena Vista Avenue in Gilroy, only to learn it was actually a controlled burn.

Crews from CalFire and the Gilroy Fire Department’s Las Animas Station were alerted to a possible vegetation fire by a driver who saw smoke, said Cliff Colyer of the Gilroy Fire Department.

Upon arrival, however, firefighters learned the man had permission to conduct a controlled burn of tree branches, clippings and other agricultural debris, Colyer said.

He said GFD firefighters were called back before even reaching the fire.
