Two grass fires that burned three to five acres along northbound U.S. Highway 101 Tuesday afternoon are connected, though a cause has yet to be determined, a CalFire spokesman said.

The fires – one off No Name Uno just north of Masten Avenue in proximity to Valley Equine and the Valley Animal Hospital, and another near the weigh scales north of the Church Avenue overpass – were called into dispatchers at about 12:45 p.m., said CalFire spokesman Jim Crawford.

“Two fires that close to each other along the roadway – they’re connected,” Crawford said. “We just don’t know how.”

There were no injuries to people or animals, though several horses were pastured near the blaze.

No structures were burned, and fire crews and Caltrans workers soaked the ground around nearby propane tanks as a safety precaution.

The fire was contained in roughly 40 minutes, Crawford said.
