Four people, including a Morgan Hill man, were injured and a San Jose teen was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a traffic accident in south San Jose.
About 3:15 a.m. Sunday, a 2000 Mitsubishi and a 2003 Toyota were stopped on the shoulder of northbound U.S. 101 just north of Metcalf Road, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol. The driver of the Mitsubishi, Kirk Paradela, 29 of Milpitas, was helping the driver of the Toyota, Kristen Pedronan, 23 of San Jose, repair a flat tire.
A third vehicle, a 2001 Mercedes driven by Eric Nungary, 18 of San Jose, was traveling north and veered off the road and collided with the Mitsubishi, which was stopped behind the Toyota, police said. The impact forced the Mitsubishi into the Toyota.
Pedronan was standing between the two parked vehicles, and suffered major injuries including a severed leg, police said. Her passenger, Shaun Paradela, 23 of Morgan Hill, who was also outside the vehicle, suffered head injuries. They were both transported to San Jose Regional Hospital.
Pedronan’s condition was unknown Tuesday, but she was still undergoing treatment at the hospital’s operating room Monday, according to CHP officer Jaime Rios.
Kirk Paradela suffered internal bleeding and major head injuries, police said. He was treated and released from Valley Medical Center. Shaun Paradela was still in intensive care at the same hospital Tuesday afternoon, Rios said.
Nungary suffered a fractured ankle and other moderate injuries, according to police. They were both transported to Valley Medical Center.
Nungary was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and was later booked into Santa Clara County Jail, police said. He remained in custody Tuesday in lieu of $100,000 bail.
