Around 10:18 a.m. Saturday a white Ford F-150 left a gaping hole in the home at 215 London Drive near the corner of Church Street in Gilroy.

Units from the Gilroy Police Department and the Gilroy Fire Department Chestnut Station responded to the incident as a crowd of concerned neighbors flocked to the street corners.

A tow truck was called to extract the truck from the house, revealing an entire dining room virtually exposed to the outside.

According to GPD Sgt. Pedro Espinoza, the Ford was headed northbound on Church Street when it crashed into the home.

Espinoza said the driver of the vehicle, who is not believed to have been under the influence, was transported to a nearby medical facility and is not in custody.

The residents were home at the time of the crash, but no one was injured, Espinoza said.

“I was in the kitchen when it happened,” said Bill Minderler, who lives in the house with his wife, two daughters and grandchildren. “It sounded like something had fallen over.”

When Minderler turned around, he saw three-quarters of a truck inside his dining room. The driver was in the front seat and unconscious, Minderler said.

“I broke the window and turned off the engine,” he explained, gazing at his home from behind a yellow line of police tape. “Then we called 911.”

Maggie Minderler, 24, described the experience as “glass shattering and shaking.”

“They think he had a seizure,” she said. “My dad knew something was wrong with him when he saw him.”

Maggie stood outside in her socks and indicated to decorations still hanging in the dining room.

They were going to be celebrating a family birthday today, she said.

“We’re all shaken up,” said Bill, who has been living in Gilroy for 30 years. “But we’re doing OK.”
