A FedEx truck flipped on its side off of U.S. 101 this morning, crashing through a fence and landing on its left side on No Name Uno Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Richard Benjamin Jr., the 40-year-old Seaside man who drove the vehicle, was not injured in the crash, which happened shortly before 11:15 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

“He was traveling a little too fast for the conditions of the roadway,” CHP Officer Andrew Mendonca said.

Benjamin, who was driving north of the Leavesley Road exit while traveling to Morgan Hill at the time of the accident, told officers that he had been driving about 55 mph, Mendonca said. CHP Officer Jaime Rios estimated the truck was actually traveling 60 to 65 mph at the time of the crash.

After careening through the wire mesh fence along the highway and knocking over a large portion of the fence, the truck landed just north of Cohansey Avenue on No Name Uno.

Neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the crash, CHP Officer Andrew Mendonca said. The truck, which was traveling northbound on U.S. 101, lost control after moving from the middle lane to the right lane, he said. Rain was sprinkling around the time of the accident, Mendonca said.

Benjamin was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Mendonca said.

Thirty minutes after the crash, Benjamin was gone but his truck was still lying on its side, oil pouring out of the engine. One of the window panes lay cracked on the ground and the interior of the vehicle appeared damaged.

“Accidents happen sometimes,” Mendonca said. “That’s why they call them accidents.”
