There were no residents or furnishings inside a vacant blazing house near Rogers Lane Thursday, leading Dale Foster, Gilroy Fire Department Chief, to suspect it may have been caused by vagrants.
Two engines and one truck from the Gilroy Fire Department, along with two engines from the South Santa Clara County Fire Department, responded to a house fire around 2:25 p.m. at 409 Hadley Court.
Foster believes the fire began in one of the back bedrooms of the 1,000-square-foot house, but so far the cause is still being investigated.
Neighbors flocked to street corners and watched from nearby lawns, but the owners of the home did not appear to be present. The entrance to Rogers Lane from Sixth Street was closed during the duration of the fire and residents driving cars were not permitted through. Members of the Gilroy Police Department were on hand to aid with traffic control as well.
While the back end of the home facing Rogers Lane sustained the brunt of the damage, an 800-square-foot area of the roof caved, according to Foster, who said there was also smoke damage in the kitchen.
Foster said roughly 25 fire personnel responded to the fire, which was brought under control at approximately 3:12 p.m.
