Dear Editor:
I would like to address a few local issues; Super Wal-Mart, farmland preservation, and Dennis Taylor’s obsession to trifle with the truth.
First let’s look at Wal-Mart a large private corporation that wants to set up a new shop in Gilroy. They have a right to do business as our elected officials see fit. After all we are and always have been a capitalist democratic republic. A small contingent of union drones and liberal whiners should not dictate what’s good for Gilroy. We elect people to represent us in that respect. We call that democracy. The unions and their operatives tried to stack the City Council and failed. So stop your caterwaling. Maybe you can buy and or lie your way into the next City Council election.
As for Edith Rodriguez loosing her chance to go to college because Wal-Mart will cause her parents’ business to close down, I seriously doubt it. Kachy produce has a strong Hispanic following and good prices even Wal-Mart can’t beat. But if she is worried about it she should do what many young people do to get through college: find a scholarship, a student loan and or a job. America is the land of opportunity to those who work hard for it.
Now let us look at agricultural land the farmers who work it and the preservation of it. The land and the farmers are the most valuable and precious resource we have. I don’t like to see prime farmland fall to the developers axe. It’s unfortunate that in our lust for cheap consumption we’ve priced the American farmer out of the market via unfair free trade, unbridled taxation, extreme insurance rates and over regulation.
The open space cadets need to redirect their energies to saving the agricultural industry. If the industry thrives ( as it once did) the land is preserved, duh. If not all your bustle fluster will do nothing to achieve your goal of open space. Remember this, the developers have more money and lawyers than you.
As for Dennis Taylor and his weekly column of weak tarraddidle, please spare us any more of it. What liberal college neutered you Dennis and what are your credentials? A B.A. in B.S?
If you were truly a longtime resident of Gilroy (I doubt it) you would know our town was a kinder gentler community when the the majority of its citizens were “a bunch of Archie Bunker boys” – i.e. farmers, landowners, business people and hard working families – the foundation of a pleasant community. That’s why you and your yuppie compadres moved here from San Jose and other large cities.
So, instead of splashing some ink on a piece of paper one day before deadline, spend a little time doing some research and get your facts straight. It could be enlightening for us and maybe for you, too. And while your at it you might even find your own soul.
