SAN JOSE – In conjunction with the exhibition Keeping Company – A Painter and Three Poets, SJMA presents a very special evening of poetry and music with American poets Robert Bly and Nils Peterson.
The event will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $7 for SJMA and SJPC members, and may be purchased at the door only.
Bly and Peterson will read from their works with the unique support and accompaniment of tabla and sitar performers Marcus Wise and David Whetstone, with whom Bly performs internationally. More than a poetry reading, this event fuses words and music in ways that parallel the creative interaction between the printed word and image in the exhibition.
The exhibition, Keeping Company – A Painter and Three Poets features etchings and lithographs by Patrick Surgalski, which are direct response to the poetry of Bly, Peterson, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
Robert Bly is one of the outstanding poets, prose essayists, and translators of our time and has been a major force in American poetry for over three decades. In his numerous roles as groundbreaking poet, editor, translator, storyteller, and father of what he has called “the expressive men’s movement,” Bly remains one of the most hotly debated American artists of the last half-century. He is the author of numerous books and anthologies including The Light around the Body, for which he won the 1967 National Book Award, and the 1990 bestseller Iron John.
Nils Peterson is Professor Emeritus at San Jose State University, where he taught creative writing, Shakespearean literature, and coordinated the creative writing program. His chapbook, Here is No Ordinary Rejoicing was published by No Deadlines Press and a collection of poems, The Comedy of Desire was published by The Blue Sofa Press.
This event is presented by SJMA in conjunction with the San Jose Poetry Center.
