SAN JOSE – Marc-Edouard Vlasic turned a breakaway into a winning goal 1:24 into overtime to lift San Jose past the Anaheim Ducks 2-1 at sold-out SAP Center at San Jose.
After the teams played a scoreless third period, Vlasic came up with the one shot of the overtime, veering around the Ducks defense before snapping a shot inside the left post to snap a two-game losing streak.
The Sharks are third in the Pacific Division with eight points and seventh overall in the Western Conference.
San Jose continues the homestand with games against Columbus on Thursday and Nashville on Saturday. The Sharks play 12 of their first 18 games on the road this campaign.
The Sharks netted the only goal of the first period when Joe Pavelski stuffed the puck past goaltender Jonathan Bernier at the 7:58 mark during a San Jose power play.
A video review was inconclusive in determining if the puck completely crossed the Ducks goal line prior to the net being displaced. The referee’s call on the ice stood, with Patrick Marleau and Joonas Donskoi credited with assists.
The Ducks earned 36 seconds of 5-on-3 power play midway through the first period but could not solve goaltender Martin Jones.
Anaheim pulled Bernier (upper body injury) for John Gibson to begin the second period. Despite coming up with a 15-5 edge in shots on net for the second period, San Jose gave up a tying goal at the 17:49 mark.
Jones stopped Antoine Vermette’s shot from the left point before center Chris Wagner controlled the rebound at the edge of the crease and sent the puck past Jones for his sixth NHL goal in 57 games.
Prior to the start of the game, former Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle was honored with a video tribute and a dropping of the ceremonial puck. Boyle, who retired recently, scored 68 goals in a six-year span for San Jose, 2008-14.
