After being tagged with its first TRi-Country Athletic League defeat of the season Tuesday at Monterey, the Gilroy High boys volleyball team was put to the test once again Thursday night.

Visiting Seaside climbed to a two-sets-to-none advantage, sending the Mustangs to the ropes. However, Gilroy rallied with authority to steal a come-from-behind, five-set victory (17-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-8, 15-8) over the Spartans, avoiding its first losing streak of the season.

Gavin Menges delivered 47 assists, setting the table for 22 kills from A.J. Been and another 12 from Robby Filice.

The Mustangs defense, which held the Spartans to just eight points in two straight sets, collected 53 digs as a team. Been had 11, while Troy Charvet, Greg Spellman and Menges each had nine digs. Filice led the way with four blocks.

Gilroy (14-4 overall, 10-1 TCAL) continues a four-game homestand against non-league opponent Soquel on Monday before jumping into the second half of league play against San Benito on Tuesday. The Mustangs then welcome Palma to Bob Hagen Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday to conclude the three-match week.
