GILROY – Tomorrow, parents will start transforming Gilroy High School’s gymnasium into a California-themed party paradise, complete with gambling, snacks and raffle prizes.

Tickets for Grad Nite, the annual all-night sober celebration for graduates, are still on sale. They can be purchased for $50 following graduation rehearsals today and Tuesday, or for $65 at the door Friday night.

This year, the theme is “California Dreamin’,” with scenes depicting Disney World, Yosemite, the California coast, Hollywood and the Sierra Nevada, said Mia DeLorenzo, Grad Nite co-chair.

Students who attend the event will have plenty of amusements to last through the night: rock-climbing, bungee basketball, sumo wrestling and mechanical bull-riding are just a few of the activities that will be available. Graduates can also gamble the night away at blackjack tables, a roulette wheel and a “cash-grab,” in which they grab as many dollars as possible.

Hypnotist Travis Fox will wrap up the night with a “Hypnomania” show at 3:30 a.m.

Throughout the night, students will get chances to win raffle prizes. Many are college-oriented, such as a dorm-sized refrigerator, microwave and a secret grand prize, DeLorenzo said. Other prizes include soap or quarters for laundry and gift certificates.

More than 100 students have already purchased tickets, which have been sold on campus since May 17, De Lorenzo said, and the crowd usually comes to about 250. Doors will open at 10 p.m. After 11 p.m., students will not be allowed to leave the celebration until 5 a.m., unless a parent picks them up.

The Grad Nite committee recruited plenty of volunteers, DeLorenzo said, and is close to the yearly fundraising goal of $40,000.

“We have had considerable donations from the community and that’s been overwhelming this year, they’ve been very generous,” DeLorenzo said.
