Let Elected Officials Run The City

We want to congratulate and thank the people who ran the Relay
for Life program (see

Relaying a Message of Hope,

June 25).
A walk to remember

Dear Red Phone:

We want to congratulate and thank the people who ran the Relay for Life program (see “Relaying a Message of Hope,” June 25). The opening ceremonies were particularly moving. It was a great tribute to the survivors and to the caretakers, which is somewhat unusual for these events. We want them to know it was very moving and very important to the people who participated. Thank you.

Red Phone:

Dear Praise:

It is moving when people are able to gain hope and courage through others. When it comes to issues as grave as cancer, it’s so commendable when people who have endured great pain in their lives are able to find the power to turn that negative into a positive inspiration for others plagued by the same disease. The human spirit is amazingly strong, and Red Phone lauds these folks along with you for reminding Gilroy.

believe what you hear?

Dear Red Phone:

I heard from residents on Montebello Drive that a woman’s body was found last week in the bushes, yet I can’t find anything in the paper. I feel that if there are things going on we need to know about them to protect ourselves. It wasn’t ’til several sexual assaults had happened that it was front page news. Our town is growing and with that comes more violence. We need to be made more aware of what is going on so that we can properly protect ourselves. If there was a body found does anyone know if it has any connection to the sexual predator that has been lurking around? He has proven to be violent.

Red Phone:

Dear Rumor Has It:

Red Phone isn’t sure where these rumors you heard originated. If a body was found in Gilroy’s bushes, it wasn’t reported to police. Police spokesman Jim Gillio said he knew of no incident like this. It could be that you heard about the 20-year-old woman’s body that was discovered Friday along a residential road on Hollister’s west side – the nearby city’s third homicide in four months (See “Woman’s Body Found on Residential Road,” June 23). It’s not likely this incident is linked to the recent rapes reported in Gilroy.

Do you like American music?

Hey Red Phone:

I just want to thank the city of Gilroy for putting on the concerts in the park this last weekend. It was most enjoyable – good music. It was a really nice way to spend an evening in the city of Gilroy. I’m so glad the city does this and I think more people should know about it.

Red Phone:

Dear Rock and Roller:

Red Phone agrees, Gilroy rocks! There’s nothing better than toe-tappin’ to live music outside in the summertime. It’s a real treat when you don’t have to drive to Santa Cruz, San Francisco or Monterey to get your groove on. Cultivating a vibrant arts and music scene is as important to a city’s success as a healthy downtown. The Summer Free Concert Series continues Saturday, June 30 with the Silicon Valley Houserockers at the Amphitheater at Christmas Hill Park. Red Phone hopes to see you there from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
