GILROY – Playoffs aren’t possible this year, but the Anchorpoint Christian 8-man football experiment continues to show promise.

Wrapping up the schedule against Calvary Christian Saturday night in Gilroy, the Warriors won 56-12 to finish their second season in school history with a 7-2 record.

Taking a 24-0 lead after the first quarter, Anchorpoint built on its advantage to go into the half ahead 48-6.

For the seniors playing their final game as Warriors, the victory was a perfect way to finish what they started as the school’s founding fathers of football.

“You always want to go out on a winning note,” said running back Christian McCrimmon. “I feel like this program will do good, real good in the future.”

One player that McCrimmon and his fellow seniors will be passing the torch to is junior quarterback Josh Ignagni, who recognized what his teammates had done in their short time as Warriors.

“They’ve been huge,” Ignagni said. “This season has pretty much been for the seniors. With all the hard work, this year it shows.”

Anchorpoint finished 2007 with a 5-2 record, but according to coaches, the team was far and away better this season than just two extra wins would suggest. Due to the fact that many of the players had never put on pads until a few weeks before last season started, this season’s squad was deeper and more competitive in its defeats.

“We’ve been blessed that we have a lot of kids that are great athletes and they have picked up the game (quickly),” said Anchorpoint offensive coordinator Tim Pierleoni. “It really is nice to (be a part of the program). … It’s been neat to see the confidence they’ve gained from playing football.”
