The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors Tuesday voted for Mike Wasserman as the board president.
Wasserman represents District 1, which includes South County, on the five-member County board.
Wasserman, a Los Gatos resident, will discuss his priorities for 2014 at the State of the County address 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the County Government Center Board Chambers.
“I am honored to serve as Board President for 2014,” Wasserman said. “I look forward to working closely with my fellow supervisors on delivering high quality, cost-effective public safety, health, emergency and recreation services for our nearly 2 million residents.”
As president of the Board of Supervisors, Wasserman will be responsible for setting the agendas for board meetings for the coming year, and will likely field numerous requests to appear and speak at events and programs all over the County over the next year, according to Wasserman’s District 1 predecessor.
“You have the opportunity to discuss the things that interest you (at board meetings),” said Gilroy Mayor Don Gage, who served as the District 1 County Supervisor for 14 years – three of those as the Board President. “You only have one vote but you’re also the spokesperson. It is a lot more work.”
Last year, Wasserman served as Vice President of the Board. He chairs the Public Safety and Justice Committee, and he is Vice Chair of the Housing, Land Use, Environment and Transportation committee.
Wasserman was elected to the Board in Nov. 2010. In addition to Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy, his district includes portions of San Jose, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, the Mount Hamilton range and the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The population of District 1 is more than 330,000, and the district encompasses about 70 percent of the County’s land area.
Prior to his election to the County Board in 2010, Wasserman served eight years on the Los Gatos Town Council, including two terms as mayor.
