Gilroy – Children who have been bitten by the acting bug have another chance to get on stage in “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”

The Gilroy Community Service Department is working once again with Rainbow Children’s Theatre on this fall’s children’s theater production. Auditions will be held Sept. 8 and Sept. 10 at the Gilroy Senior Center.

“It’s nice to give people an option of two dates,” said Cathy Mirelez, cultural arts and museum supervisor.

Auditions are open to children ages 5 to 18. Kids should come ready to sing a short a cappella song and learn a simple dance combination. They should also dress in comfortable clothes and shoes that allow them to dance.

“We will need to get a certain minimum actors to proceed,” Mirelez said. And if they do get enough actors to put on the show, each participant to audition will get a part in the well-known tale of a Kansas girl lost in Oz.

Rehearsals will start one to two weeks after auditions and will be held each Saturday. Performances will be the weekends of Nov. 11 and 18. The community services department worked with Rainbow Children’s Theatre for on the summer production of “Annie, Jr.”

The city plans to put on four productions a year and they will be working with John Bisceglie on a winter production, Mirelez said.

“Working with both production companies offers a really nice choice [for families],” Mirelez added.

The theater program fee is $125 for Gilroy residents and $130 for non-residents. Families are responsible for selling tickets for the show. Details: Gilroy Community Services at 846-0460.
