The teen panel surveyed 40 local teens and asked the following questions. What is the most important quality in a teacher, and what subject does your favorite teacher teach? Below is the summary of the results:
• Students want a teacher who takes time to get to know them as individuals. This was a common theme. Students prefer teachers who don’t treat them as simply numbers in a gradebook.
• Students like teachers who are excited about their subject matter. Their passion helps students better relate to the material.
• Some students indicated a preference for a class in which the standards and expectations are low. They see these classes as a free period.
• Students like teachers with a sense of humor. The old cliché about having fun while learning holds true.
• Innovative classrooms earn high marks. Students appreciate teachers who lecture in innovative ways and break the monotony of the typical school day.
