If you are anything like me, then you are nipping at the bud for the start of the 2003 NFL season.

Feeding my hunger, I’ve already visited the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp last week in Santa Clara – as well as their early June volunteer mini-camp. I spoke with Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia – Gilroy’s hometown hero – and he’s seems as ready as ever for another strong campaign.

On Friday, I will hit up my first pre-season football game at Oakland Coliseum to get my first look at the Raiders – who open up against the St. Louis Rams. I’m sure the Silver & Black are poised for a return visit to the Super Bowl. I also can’t hardly wait for the 49ers-Raiders’ August 14 pre-season matchup in San Francisco.

I’ve signed up for a Fantasy Football League and have already ranked a couple of hundred players for the upcoming draft.

At Gilroy High School, the Mustang gridmen begin their practice schedule August 11 at 8 a.m. I look forward to speaking with Coach Darren Yafai about the locals chances for this season. I’m just as excited as I am for the NFL to learn about the new stars from our high school.

The same goes for Gavilan College – where the Rams’ gridmen return from one of their most successful and exciting seasons. I’m sure Coach John Lango has his boys prepared for even more achievements this year.

I’ve got to say it, “Are you ready for some football?” – because I sure am. My Friday nights are dedicated to Gilroy High, my Saturdays to the college gridiron, and my Sundays as well as Monday nights are booked with tons of NFL action.

I must admit my favorite NFL team has always been the Washington Redskins – the busiest team in terms of player turnover in the offseason. But the man I love to watch more than any other is Jeff Garcia. My recent vacation to New York was not without some playful taunting to friends of his amazing comeback over the G-men.

As for a season outlook, I’ve got to go with the Raiders in the AFC and the 49ers in the NFC. I guess I’m somewhat swayed by the proximity of these teams, but I honestly feel they both can go all the way to set up an All-Cali Super Bowl. Wouldn’t that be great?

Sure, I’ll root for my Skins every week and hope they surprise me. That’s the fun in football. You never know. Unlike other professional leagues where you can almost predict before the start of the season which teams will be in the thick of it, the NFL brings mystery every year. There are always sleeper teams and major disappointments. You just have to watch and see what transpires from week to week.

So I say again, “Are you ready for some football?”

Bone-crushing tackles and hammering sacks. Long bombs down field, powerful runs up the middle, and acrobatic catches. Touchdown celebrations and last-second comebacks. That’s the NFL I love to watch.
