A 39-year-old woman was sexually assaulted April 9 in south Gilroy, according to police.

Police did not have many details of the incident but were alerted to the assault by the woman’s doctor, Sgt. Jim Gillio said.

Over the course of the day, the woman “was most likely sexually assaulted on two occasions” by an acquaintance, Gillio said. The woman “was not held against her will,” and was allowed to go home and later returned, he said.

She went to her doctor at a San Jose hospital for a visit unrelated to the sexual assault and, during the course of the visit, told him about the assault, Gillio said.

“The doctor called the Gilroy Police Department to report the incident,” he said.

Police would not release a description of the suspect or his age.
